At Restaurant Associates we know all about food – and how important it can be to the success of your business.

Founded in New York in the late-1950s, Restaurant Associates began life as an independent restaurant and coffee shop. Corporate catering was an integral part of the business, and in 1997 Restaurant Associates joined Compass Group, a world-leading support services company. We arrived in the UK in October 2001, operating under the Roux Fine Dining and Leiths brands from High Holborn, and following rapid growth Restaurant

Associates became a firmly established part of the hospitality industry. Having moved to our Martin Lane HQ, the business was streamlined to solely function as Restaurant Associates, offering fine dining employee dining and inspiring events solutions, among other services. We work with businesses across a number of industry sectors, including accounting, banking, insurance, legal, media and charity, with around 170 sites in the UK.

When it comes to keeping standards high – especially in the critical area of health and safety, two things set Restaurant Associates apart:

We're accredited to three international standards:

ISO 9001:2008

for environmental management

OHSAS18001 for occupational health and safety

Our directors and senior leaders are just as involved in health and safety as they are in customer service or finance.

It's how we drive our culture of safety without compromising our innovation. We're extremely tough on ourselves so we're beyond reproach when others look at us - clients, auditors, regulators or environmental health officers. And we never want to stop improving.

We believe our commitment to CSR not only helps our clients to reduce, re-use and recycle; it also helps them save money.

Whether working with our nutritionist consultant Max Tomlinson to support health and wellbeing at client sites or working with great charities, CSR is important to our clients' businesses and equally to ours.

Our four CSR pillars are:

We look after our colleagues and they look after our clients, customers, users and guests. We provide great employment opportunities, ensure fair employment and promote equality and diversity.

We have developed a set of sustainable sourcing commitments that outline our ongoing dedication to improving provenance, animal welfare and people welfare. We champion British produce across our sites, promoting the use of fresh seasonal ingredients and supporting British farmers and producers. And our focus on traceability and quality means we work closely with producers and growers to ensure we source the best ingredients from our trusted suppliers.

EatFair is a Compass-founded Fairtrade Foundation, which is a counter-top retail range featuring the most-loved Fairtrade products. However it has so much more to offer than just great food: for every item sold, we have pledged to donate 5p to our own Fairtrade projects around the world.

EatFair supports third world communities as well as the Fairtrade Foundation's work in ensuring these farmers get a fair price for their produce.

The first EatFair project, working with the Semliki Co-operative, is up and running in Uganda.

We understand the impact our business has on the environment, and we're striving to take firm action on re-ducing carbon emissions, optimising road miles and minimising waste. We have been measuring and taking action on food waste for years and we are constantly working with market leaders to introduce tools to help our teams reduce drive down food waste even further.

We have rolled out Winnow's Yield Optimisation System to our strategic sites in the UK to help us reduce waste and improve the sustainability of our operations. Today, food waste is down over 50%, and yet service quality has remained at its highest standard. An average of 15 tonnes less food per year, per site is wasted, which equates to over 10,000 plated meals per year.

lt's one thing being a smallish, nimble restaurant business that's bursting with brilliant new ideas. But sometimes you need some big shoulders to lean on. Especially when you want to draw on some serious buying power. Or international connections. Or useful links with other services.

Which is where Compass come in. As well as being the leading provider of contract catering and support services in the UK and Ireland, they're the world's largest food services company. With sites in 50 countries and a multi-billion pound turnover, they've got the scale and the global reach. That's some daddy. And we can call our other Compass brothers and sisters when clients

need a bit of help in other areas like Rapport, for guest services, ICM for cleaning management and VSG for security. As part of Compass Group we benefit from a big investment in systems and infrastructure, yet as a specialist company we provide our clients with a tailored, personal service that you'd normally only expect from a small independent business.
